Look to CynaMed for Resources On Certified Med Tech Classes

Interested in becoming a certified Med Tech, but not sure where to start? While CynaMed does not directly train or certify Medication Technicians, we do have a wealth of knowledge on where to go and what’s required for your career. And if you already have your certification and are looking for your next position, we can help match you with your perfect fit.

What Is a Med Tech?

A Med Tech, also known as a Certified Med Aide, is a certified medication technician. These are healthcare workers who administer medications to patients under the supervision of a registered nurse or other qualified healthcare professional.

Med Techs work in various healthcare settings, including long-term care facilities such as nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and residential care homes.

If you are a CNA working in this field and are feeling ready to take your career to the next step, getting your Med Tech certification may be right for you.

What’s Needed for Certification?

Requirements for Med Tech certification vary by state, but Pennsylvania state regulations require non-medically licensed individuals to complete a Department-approved medication administration training course within the past two years in order to administer medication.

To initially obtain certification, individuals must

  • Have their high school diploma or GED
  • Complete a state-approved training program
  • Pass a competency evaluation exam
  • Pass a criminal background check and meet other legal requirements

Generally, individuals will want to already have a wealth of experience in the field as well as their CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) certification. In fact, some facilities require CNA certification prior to Med Tech certification, so check with your desired facility first. Becoming a CNA can take anywhere from four to 16 weeks, depending on your experience, credentials, your facility’s requirements, and the specific course(s) you take.

Once an individual has completed the process and obtained their Med Tech certification, they are ready to assist patients with providing essential medication administration services.

Various institutions throughout Pennsylvania offer training, including:

  • Specialized Training Providers like MyODP
  • Online institutions like Elite Medical Academy

Career Path Opportunities for a Certified Med Tech

Obtaining certification as a Med Tech is the next step in opening the door to a fulfilling career.

Often, individuals interested in working in the healthcare industry are unsure of what area to pursue or if they even want to undergo the length of schooling required. Starting out as a Med Tech is a great way to gain experience in the field and better clarify what route you want to take.

With experience and additional training, Med Techs can advance their career and pursue roles such as Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and Registered Nurses (RNs).

You can also choose to specialize in areas like geriatric care or psychiatric medication. As a Medication Technician, you can work how and where you want.
