At CynaMed, we pride ourselves in selecting the perfect employment for people who are looking to start a career in nursing. However, before embarking on a new career as a registered nurse, you may want to know what will be expected of you on a daily basis. Knowing this, you can face your journey in the confidence that you will be able to fulfill RN duties to the best of your ability.Â
What is Expected of an RN?
Making up for the biggest healthcare job in the U.S., RNs play a vital role in medical facilities. They are at the core of our healthcare system, performing many different tasks, ensuring that every person in their care receives the precise, compassionate help they need to recover and heal.Â
RNs work in all manner of medical settings, including hospitals, emergency clinics, assisted living facilities, doctors’ offices, and more. There may be differences in the size of the nursing team and the patients they serve. RNs working in a physician’s office, for example, may take on more administrative work, while those working in a hospital are more likely to work directly with patients.Â
Despite the different circumstances and environments, the basic duties of an RN remain more or less the same from facility to facility. After all, the ultimate goal is creating favorable outcomes for patients in all medical settings.Â
Basic Duties of an Registered Nurse
Given their skills and responsibilities, the daily duties of an RN typically include the following:Â
- Assessing, observing, and speaking to patients. Often, the first person a patient sees after being admitted is an RN. During treatment, the RN is the constant and often comforting presence for patients, which makes this basic duty very important.Â
- Recording details and symptoms of patient medical history and treatment progress. Keeping accurate patient records is vital for their continued care.Â
- Preparing patients for exams and treatment.
- Administering medications and treatments, keeping track of side effects and results.
- Creating, implementing, and evaluating patient care plans with the medical team.
- Performing direct care, such as cleaning wounds, after-surgery care, changing dressings and bandages.Â
- Assisting in medical procedures as needed.
- Operating and monitoring medical equipment, such as blood pressure and vital signs monitors and other instruments.
- Drawing blood, urine samples, etc. for lab work.
- Educating patients and family members on treatment and care plans, as well as answering their questions. In other words, being a trusted liaison between the doctor and the patient.Â
Specifically, senior RNs also supervise LPNs and vocational nurses, nursing assistants, and nursing students.
