1. The “First 15” Strategy

How your shift will go for the day is often determined within the first 15 minutes. After receiving a report, do a quick walk-through of all of your assigned rooms. Check for the immediate needs of your residents, such as if anyone needs to use the restroom or is hungry. By addressing these smaller needs quickly, you prevent three different call bells from ringing simultaneously twenty minutes later when you are in the middle of a more difficult task.

2. Cluster Your Care

The most efficient CNAs understand how to cluster, or group, their tasks. Enter a room planning to accomplish everything that the resident needs, rather than just completing one small task. If you are going in to take vitals, bring the fresh linens you’ll need for their bed change. While the blood pressure cuff is cycling, tidy the bedside table or refill their ice. Clustering care reduces the number of trips you take back and forth to the supply room, saving you time and energy for the day ahead.

3. Master the “Pocket Stash”

Efficiency is often found within the pockets of your scrubs. A prepared CNA stocks their scrubs with items they often need to have on hand. This includes extra pairs of gloves, a reliable pen, a small notepad for recording vitals, and even a few alcohol prep pads. When a registered nurse asks you for a quick blood sugar reading or a set of vitals, having your tools ready makes you an indispensable part of the team.

4. Optimize Your “Brain Sheet”

Creating a simple brain sheet at the beginning of your shift makes your shift far easier. List your residents by room number and create columns for vitals, intake/output, and transfers. Be sure to check these off as you go to ensure that when it comes time for documentation, you aren’t struggling to remember who ate 50% of their meal and who ate 75%. Accurate data is something every nurse relies on for their own charting.

5. Communicate Proactively

Don’t wait for a problem to worsen before you pay attention to it. If you notice a resident’s skin looks slightly pinker than usual, or they seem more confused than during your morning shift, tell your nurse immediately. Proactive communication not only builds trust but also ensures that your residents are getting the best care. When you show that you are observant and take charge, you make the nurse’s job easier, which creates a more supportive work environment for everyone.

6. The “Stocking” Habit

When you find yourself with a couple of spare minutes, use that time to restock. Fill the glove boxes, replenish the linen cart, or tidy the supply closet. When your future self is in a rush, you’ll be thankful that you can easily grab everything you need.
