Certified Nursing Assistant – CNA Jobs: What are the Job Responsibilities?
Certified nursing assistants provide basic healthcare and assistance for patients in hospitals or long-term healthcare facilities such as nursing homes. They provide assistance to LPNs and RNs and can work under their supervision.
Some of the job duties that CNAs perform include the following:
- Assist patients with activities of daily living such as bathing, getting dressed, or toileting
- Take vital signs such as blood pressure or temperature
- Turn or rotate patients who are bedridden
- Record patient’s health concerns and report all information to supervising nurses or doctors
- Serve meals and assist patients with feeding if needed
- Assist LPNs and RNs with their tasks
CNAs who work in assisted living facilities or nursing homes are usually the primary care providers for their patients. These nurses often have more contact with patients than other members of the staff, and therefore develop a close relationship with them.
What is the Work Environment Like?
The majority of certified nursing assistants in the U.S. work in nursing care facilities. These can include nursing homes and assisted living locations. Others work in state, local, or private hospitals, or for home healthcare agencies. The job duties for a CNA job can be very strenuous. They spend most of their workday on their feet and take on many physically demanding tasks for their patients. These tasks can include lifting or helping with mobility. For that reason, nursing assistants have one of the highest percentages of on the job injuries and illnesses.
Most CNAs work full time. Because they often work in hospitals or nursing homes which provide 24/7 care, it is common for CNAs to work on nights, weekends, and holidays.
CNAs who earned the most money in 2018 worked for government agencies, hospitals, and nursing care facilities. Those that earned the lowest worked in-home health care or for assisted living facilities.
