What Places Employ Med Techs?

Medical technicians, also known as nursing aides or med techs, have a decent amount of responsibilities. They conduct bodily fluid tests in laboratories and provide care to patients in a number of ways. The med tech job is quite dynamic. So it would make sense that there is a variety of workplaces where a med tech can work.

Currently, there is a high demand for med techs nationwide. The job market is on the rise and healthcare facilities are hiring med techs now more than ever. There is much diversity amongst the places that employ med techs.

Nursing Homes/Assisted Living Facilities

Nursing homes and assisted living facilities are the most common places where med techs are employed. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, about 40 percent of med techs work in nursing homes. Med techs treat elderly and/or handicapped people all day and night, and make living their lives easier.

Hospitals

The next most common landing spot for a medical tech is a hospital or clinic. Usually at this workplace, med techs are more involved in testing a patient’s vitals and reporting the information to doctors. Med techs employed in hospitals should be expecting to work with laboratory equipment and fluids such as blood and urine.

Independent Laboratories

Some med techs may get hired by an individually-run laboratory. At these labs, a med tech’s duties are similar to what they would be doing at a hospital, doctor’s office, or clinic. However, there is little to no interactions with patients. Medical technicians work with infectious specimens while in laboratories. A med tech working in a lab may be working on analyzing blood or urine, vaccine research, and other in-depth assignments.
