What is a CEU for Nurses?

As a nurse, you are constantly growing and learning to keep up with advancing healthcare. CEU for nurses, or continuing education, is a requirement for many nurses to continue working in their prospective fields. CEU is only targeted at nurses and provides nurses with the necessary tools to continue providing optimal care.

Free CEU for Nurses

There are free CEUs available online for nurses to take from the comfort of their homes. An accrediting board would have to approve many of the courses. This can also depend on your school of choice. The safest way to verify that information is by accessing the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Some of the top sites that offer free CEU for nurses include:

  • Abbott Nutrition Health Institute
  • American Association of Critical-Care Nurses
  • American Nurses Association
  • Medscape
  • Nurse.org
  • RN.org
  • National Nurses United
  • MedPageToday

When to Take CEU for Nursing

According to NursingCE, ”CE requirements must be completed during the renewal period immediately preceding the license expiration date.” This means that your CEU classes must be taken and completed way before your current license expires. Otherwise, you may suffer from a license suspension and have to pay fines, which is not fun.

You don’t always need CEU for nursing. However, it’s essential to check your license requirements within your state to be sure.

For example, in Pennsylvania, the requirements for RNs include: “30 hours contact hours every two years including a mandatory child abuse course,” as stated by nurse.org.
